Attic Kylix Achilles

The large Attic kylix, whose name means "cup," had as its main use, precisely, that of a wine cup during symposia attended exclusively by men.  In this artwork, the predominant theme depicted, both in the inner center roundel and on the outer side rim, is a reference to the war in which Achilles and the Trojan army confronted the queen of the Amazons and the Achaeans, respectively. The rest of the cup is black with a "dogtooth pattern" ornamentation delimiting the bowl from the base.  The artistic depiction of the large Attic kylix is crafted using the black-figure technique, whose complex and detailed battle scenes, in the inner bowl and on the outer rim, are highlighted by white and burgundy polychromes.
A light patina also gives the work a secular effect as a tribute inspired by the original artifacts handed down by ancient craftsmen.  This object was crafted with ancient techniques through the use of natural paints created manually from raw materials found in nature, which baked in oxygen reduction acquire their characteristic colors and tonalities.  From clays to brushes, each process is the result of countless years of experimental archaeology and study in pursuit of perfection.
